Helpful tips for incontinence

Have you always assumed that almost only older people suffer from bladder weakness? Far from it. One in four young menstruating people has problems with urinary incontinence. Bladder weakness also often occurs after pregnancy.

Incontinence is no longer a reason to retreat into your shell and avoid going outside. We'll give you useful tips to help you relieve your bladder weakness and regain your everyday life.

Tips for everyday life

It may sound paradoxical, but you should remember to go to the bathroom regularly. If you empty your bladder regularly, it will not become overfilled. A reminder on your phone can help you remember to go to the bathroom. Make sure your bathroom is easy to reach. Do not block your path so you don't trip over objects in a hurry. Avoid clothes that are difficult to remove, such as bodysuits or overalls.

Even if you should drink enough throughout the day, it may be advisable to reduce the amount you drink in the evening to avoid the need to urinate at night and getting up frequently at night. Also pay attention to your pelvic floor and do not put additional strain on it. You should not carry more than 5 kg and sit as much as possible during work, but change position more often.

Incontinence and nutrition

A balanced diet is essential for urinary incontinence. Even if you have a frequent urge to urinate, you should drink at least 1.5 liters a day. If you continually drink too little liquid, you risk not only dehydrating your body, but also kidney problems and long-term constipation. Avoid drinks containing alcohol, caffeine or sweeteners as much as possible, as these have a diuretic effect.

If you have urinary incontinence, you should prevent constipation, as otherwise the pressure on the bladder increases and the incontinence can get worse. Eat as balanced a diet as possible and make sure you get enough fiber from fruit, vegetables and whole grain products. These stimulate digestion. Avoid foods like cabbage, which can cause constipation. You can stimulate sluggish digestion with psyllium husks and anise-fennel-caraway tea. You can buy both at the drugstore. The best way to combat acute constipation is with foods that have a laxative effect. These include buttermilk, dried plums and sauerkraut juice.

Strengthen the pelvic floor

A strong pelvic floor noticeably alleviates the symptoms of urinary incontinence. It is therefore worth training it. This is particularly successful with yoga and Pilates, as these target the deep muscles. Hula hooping also trains the pelvic floor effectively and is also a lot of fun.

Throughout the day, you can actively tense and relax your pelvic floor while standing, sitting or lying down. Pull your pelvic floor into the inside of your body when you breathe out and relax it again when you breathe in. This little exercise strengthens the pelvic floor for the long term and can be easily integrated into everyday life.

Incontinence and skin care

If the skin in the intimate area is frequently moist and comes into contact with aggressive ingredients in urine, irritation and skin damage can result. After contact with urine, clean the skin with skin-friendly wet wipes and use special creams to protect it from the recurring moisture. Too frequent contact with water and soap also has an irritating effect. If irritation or skin changes occur, you should seek medical advice.
