Wool industry and veganism

Are you wondering why wool is not vegan? We can enlighten you! Let's start by defining what vegan actually means. People who live vegan avoid all products that come from animals and also the use of animals. The use of animals also includes, for example, zoos and horse riding. People who live vegan avoid these things out of ethical conviction, as they are against the torture and killing of animals. Animal products are not only fish, meat, eggs, milk and honey, but also clothing made of leather, down, fur and wool. Wool is a product that comes from animals and is associated with animal cruelty and exploitation. Shearing animals can be associated with great pain and mutilation. This is why products made of wool cannot be classified as vegan.

Wool industry and merino wool - why you should avoid buying it

Does the term Merino wool sound familiar to you? It is the wool of the so-called Merino sheep . These sheep are bred by humans to produce as much wool as possible. This is a man-made cruel breeding with the aim of breeding the wool volume of the sheep as high as possible. Did you know that the wool volume of these sheep has increased from 1.5-2 kg/year to a full 18 kg/year in the last 200 years? That is an increase of at least 800%. So you can see that this is no longer natural. Rather, this is a clear case of Animal cruelty before.

The sheep have a lot of skin and wool, so a lot of moisture accumulates under the large folds of skin, especially in the area of the anus and genitals. This means that fly maggots can hatch on the Merino sheep and painfully eat their way through the sheep's tissue. Some owners carry out a particularly cruel procedure in which they cut away the folds of the sheep's genital area and anus to prevent the fly maggots from nesting in these areas. During this process, the sheep are usually not given any anesthesia or painkillers. A cozy wool sweater is therefore probably hiding a lot of animal suffering, which is why we at Taynie recommend that you use vegan alternatives.

Why is wool problematic?

Are you perhaps surprised that wool is problematic, since it is a natural product? This is probably because the use of wool is deliberately associated with terms such as “natural” and “sustainable” in many marketing strategies of the clothing industry. The reality, however, is different. The production of wool is never without Animal suffering and exploitation possible. In addition, the environment and the climate also suffer from the production of wool, even though it is a “natural” product.Below we would like to give you a little insight into the topic.

You may have heard that small ruminants such as sheep and goats produce large amounts of CO2 emissions and methane. In addition, large areas of land are needed to keep the animals, which means that forests and natural ecosystems have to be cleared. Irrigating the pastures and the animals' drinking water requires enormous amounts of water. So you can see that these circumstances not only threaten biodiversity, but also negatively affect the nutrient balance in soils and water.

When wool growth slows down, many animals are transported directly to slaughter or to the Middle East under poor conditions. Many animals die beforehand due to poor living and transport conditions.

What are the disadvantages of wool?

In addition to the fact that wool is harmful to animals and the environment, there are numerous other things that speak against buying wool products. Some of them will certainly sound familiar to you. One of the most annoying disadvantages of wool is that products made of this material are usually unpleasantly scratchy and feel anything but pleasant on the skin. You have certainly been in the situation where you put on a cozy winter sweater and after a short time realized that it was a annoying scratching on your skin. But the scratchy feeling is not the only disadvantage. The keyword of the next disadvantage is quite clear: Moths ! Wool is susceptible to moths because they feed mainly on animal hair. In addition to the possibility of moth infestation, wool also tends to shrink when washed and forms annoying lint. So you can see that there are a few points that speak against buying products with wool.

Which material is best for the environment?

Now you are of course faced with the question of which material is best for the environment. It is particularly good if you make sure that your plant-based materials are organic when you buy them. Did you know that organic cotton uses less energy during the manufacturing process and also has a lower greenhouse potential? Organic cotton is therefore more affordable in terms of sustainability than conventional cotton. That is why we at Taynie use, among other things, 100% organic cotton .

Other vegan materials that can be classified as environmentally friendly are hemp and soy silk. A clear advantage of the hemp plant is that it can be completely composted and its cultivation usually does not require any pesticides or fertilizers. Soy silk is a byproduct of soy processing that is biodegradable. It can be clearly stated here that there are sustainable alternatives to conventional wool that are not only good for the environment but also for animals.
