Cinnamon for menstrual cramps - how the winter spice helps

Especially in winter, when the scent of gingerbread, mulled wine and cinnamon is in the air, people feel warm and cozy. Scents awaken memories and promote good feelings. But that's not all: cinnamon has a variety of healing effects - including in connection with periods and menstrual cramps. We have summarized for you what you should bear in mind when taking cinnamon, in what form you can take it and how it can affect your menstruation.

Cassia or Ceylon cinnamon - what's the difference?

First things first: cinnamon is not just cinnamon. A distinction is made between two relevant types of cinnamon: cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) and Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum ceylanicum). The somewhat cheaper cassia cinnamon comes from China. Visually, it differs from Ceylon cinnamon, which comes from Sri Lanka - especially if it is bought in stick form. While cassia consists of a single, thick, rolled-up layer of bark from older trees, the Ceylon cinnamon tree tends to shed several thin inner barks. The two varieties also differ in taste. Cassia tastes strong and slightly sweet, while Ceylon has a more gentle aroma.

The most important difference, however, is thecoumarin contentwhich is rather low in Ceylon cinnamon. However, this is significantly higher in the relatively inexpensive cassia cinnamon. Important to know: If consumed in excess, coumarin can be harmful to the kidneys and liver. Adults with a body weight of approx. 60 kg should therefore not consume more than one level teaspoon of cassia cinnamon per day. Ceylon cinnamon, with its negligible amount of coumarin, is harmless.

Premenstrual syndrome includes both physical and psychological symptoms that can occur a few days before your period starts. These can include menstrual pain, headaches, back pain or mood swings.

Cinnamon also stimulates the uterine muscles and therefore has an antispasmodic effect. Cinnamon can also stimulate menstruation or induce labor. Caution is therefore advised when consuming cinnamon, especially for pregnant women.

Another property of cinnamon is its antibacterial and antifungal function. Cinnamon can therefore help against bladder infections, among other things.

Many menstruating women suffer from digestive problems during their period and cinnamon can also provide relief here. It is considered an antispasmodic, digestive and appetite stimulant. Cinnamon can promote muscle activity in the gastrointestinal wall, which stimulates digestion. This makes it your helper for gastrointestinal problems.

Many people want their period to start earlier, for example when an important exam or summer vacation is coming up. After all, menstruation can be accompanied by various physical and psychological complaints and thus have a negative impact on well-being. So are there perhaps even certain foods that can influence the menstrual cycle and trigger menstruation?

You may have heard that cinnamon can trigger menstruation and wondered whether this is just a myth. This idea is based on ancient traditions and folk wisdom. At this point, we can tell you that cinnamon cannot directly trigger your period - there is hardly any scientific evidence. However, cinnamon can stimulate your blood circulation and regulate your hormone levels. This could improve your menstrual cycles.
